The Top 10 Best Retro Console Games of All Time...

This one is for all our gamer fans out there! Follow the video game market crash of 1982 (Thanks a lot, E.T.), Nintendo launched the world into a console gaming frenzy with the launch of the Nintendo Entertainment System. It seemed as though the home video gaming market was pretty much re-invented overnight, and in a very BIG way!

Since then, hundreds of games have been released on a variety of home based consoles, but few have the same charm and appeal as the classic retro titles of the 1980's and 90's. Well, at least for those of us who grew up with them. And so, we here at Infinite Earths got to thinking: What if you were dropped on a desert island and were only allowed to take 10 video game titles with you?

Okay, never mind the fact that if you were dropped on a desert island there would obviously be no source of power, thus no means to play these titles in the first place. Just suspend your imagination! Whatever you'd need to play the games would be provided for you. Still, 10 titles. 10 gaming cartridges that you'd be stuck with during your whole time on the island. They'd be your only source of entertainment. And you'd have to play them over and over and over...

     Which ones would you choose?

Well, it took some thinking, but we've come up with a list of what we believe are the Top 10 best retro console games available today! Of course, some guidelines had to be met. First, they had to be console games, so no DOS, although that may be the subject for a future write-up. Second, we couldn't over saturate the list with a bunch of games from a single gaming franchise. Simple enough, right? Well, not as simple as you'd think!

In any case, after locking ourselves away in a dark room, we've emerged with a list of, what we feel, are the 10 best. Now, you may not agree with every entry, but we hope at least some of your favorites have made our list...

     Let's begin, shall we?

     10. Sonic The Hedgehog (1991) - Sonic pretty much became the face of Sega in the 1990's. Launched in 1991, the first title in the series was meant to go head-to-head with Nintendo's immensely popular Super Mario Bros. franchise. Players would take control of Sonic, a speedy blue hedgehog, and crusade across multiple worlds attempting to stop the vile Dr. Robotnik from mechanizing everything in his path. Along the way, you would collect power rings and various power-ups to help you in your quest. Numerous Sonic titles would follow the first, but we've put this one on the list because, quite simply, it is the title that started it all. Not only that, but it literally divided gamers into two distinct groups - The Sonic fans and the Mario fans, for close to a decade! Also, it was the first time a Sega title featured the trademark chant on its title screen! For daring to go head-to-head with Nintendo, Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog takes the #10 spot on our list!

     9. Donkey Kong Country (1994) - A character first introduced in 1981, Donkey Kong had to wait over 10 years before Nintendo would give him his own solo title. And did they ever deliver! A classic sidescroller that seemed to use every last ounce of 16-bit computing power at the SNES's disposal, this game allowed players to take control of a former Mario baddie as he and friend Diddy desperatly attempted to get back their stolen bananas from the ruthless King K. Rool and his army of cold-blooded Kremlings! Like other games of the time, Donkey Kong pitted players against numerous baddies, challenged them to collect bananas and letter tiles along the way and test their skills against some hardcore bosses. This title takes the #9 spot on the list for successfully taking a former villain and giving him a fun-filled, state-of-the-art gaming title players couldn't get enough of!

     8. Super Metroid (1994) - Very few games have captured the sense of bleak isolation as this SNES classic did when released in 1994. Already a well known franchise from the NES and Game Boy, this newest title allowed players to take control of intergalactic bounty hunter Samus Aran as she is dropped onto a desolate world that seems to be heavily influenced, at least in tone, by Ridley Scott's Alien film from 1979. And let's not forget about the soundtrack, it really added to the sense of danger and fright this game was no doubt attempting to convey. Like Donkey Kong Country, Super Metroid seemed to use every last bit of 16-bit power at its disposal to give gamers a truly beautiful, in-depth gaming experience that we find still quite impressive even almost 20 years later! Easily the best of the classic Metroid games, Super Metroid took everything we loved about the NES original and made it better!

     7. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (1991) - Super Metroid made us fear the unknown, but three years prior to that titles release, A Link to the Past reminded us how fun the unknown could really be! A top-down Hyrule is the world gamers explore, a world crammed full of treasures, power-ups and all kinds of awesome retro gaming goodies that seem to be lacking oh so very much in this newest age of console gaming. This title was released before the years when players who strayed too far were kindly set back on course. If you got lost in A Link to the Past, you stayed lost until you found your way out! No help or assistance came to player's aid, so don't expect to find it! For having the ability to suck gamers in for hours at a time all in an effort to find their way back on track, this classic Zelda title takes the #7 spot on our list!

     6. Earthworm Jim (1994) - Another classic title for the Sega Genesis, gamers took control of Jim, an earthworm equipped with a hi-tech space suit and a rapid-fire blaster pistol that would make even Han Solo jealous! A great example of a mid-90's sidescroller, gamers took Jim across numerous cartoony worlds as he attempts to take out the vile Queen-Slug-for-a-Butt and the psychotic bounty hunter Psy-Crow. Throughout the course of the game you'll encounter some of the strangest baddies ever captured on a console game and engage in some of the oddest missions ever recalled to mind. But, in a game that includes giant hamsters, a cat named Evil and the ability to launch cows, how can this game not be fun? A 90's classic that is sure to have you laughing!

     5. Tetris (1984 : NES) - Who knew a game with such a seemingly simple concept could eat away as much time as Tetris did? Originally created by Alexi Pajitnov, Tetris centers around the concept of basically finding the best way to successfully arrange a group of colored blocks without running out of room. See? Simple. But, oh how frustrating, and oh how fun! Many hours were spent, and still are spent, playing numerous versions of this classic gaming title. Yet, the NES version was our first exposure to it, and so it makes the list for introducing us to one of the best gaming concepts in history - being a title that was both simple and fun!

 4. Pac-Man (1984 : NES) - Another arcade era classic brought home through the folks at Nintendo and another title that was both simple and fun! Players control Pac-Man through a maze-like gaming arena. Along the way, you must gobble up pellets and avoid those pesky ghosts that seem bent on destroying you no matter what! Power Pellets could be eaten, giving players a chance to take revenge on Blinky, Inky, Pinky & Clyde for a few seconds and fruit pieces would pop up every so often to add to your final score! Again, the NES version of this game was our first exposure to this classic gaming title and thus, it holds a special place in our hearts! Sure it looks simple, heck even boring to those who didn't grow up playing it. But, trust us, there was a reason Pac-Man fever gripped the world all those years ago - the game is unbelievably addicting! Any of you younglings out there who don't believe us are encouraged to give this classic title a try - but don't say we didn't warn you!

3. Adventure Island II (1991) - The second title in Hudson's Adventure Island series was released on the NES in 1991 and took everything great about the original and made it even better! The game allows players to once again take control of Master Higgins as he makes his way across eight different islands, each with a different environment and baddies to defeat. However, what makes this game #3 on our list is the addition of the four ride-able dinosaurs included in this title! That's right kids, before Yoshi took Mario for a ride, Adventure Island II was allowing gamers to ride four different dinosaurs! Each had their own strengths and weaknesses and made crusading across the islands some what easier. Yet, loose your dino buddy and the game, in many instances, became that much harder! Riding dinosaurs before Mario takes this Adventure Island sequel to the #3 spot on our list!

  2. Pokemon Red/Blue (1998) - Ah, the Pokemon craze of the late 90's! How awesome was this franchise when it first hit our shores? It was a simpler time where there were only 151 Pocket Monsters to catch, players could trade over a cable and handheld gaming systems were just entering the glorious age of colored screens! Countless hours were spent on the playground battling friends to see who was the #1 Pokemon master in all the land, and that was just the beginning! TV Shows, movies, toys, t-shirts, a trading card game...Pokemon was everywhere and is still going strong even 15-years after reaching our shores! For being the title that launched a craze to rival Pogs and Crazy Bones, and being the best generation of this long-running gaming franchise, Pokemon takes the #2 spot on our list...

       1. Super Mario Bros. 3 (1990) - It has been 23 years since Super Mario Bros. 3 was released here in North America and it is still considered one of the hottest selling Super Mario titles the world over! The third title in the NES Super Mario series introduced players to new enemies and power-ups, a full map screen, the ability to keep power-ups in reserve for later, the Koopa Kids and many more never-before-seen additions to the Super Mario Bros. gaming cannon. It has been re-released numerous times over the years, on a number of different consoles including the SNES, Game Boy Advance and Wii and time and again, new generations are introduced, and fall in love, with this classic Nintendo sidescroller! Packing everything from Super Leafs to Frog Suits and featuring some serious sprawling ambition that surely maxed out the little 8-bit NES of the 1990's, Super Mario Bros. 3 has stood the test of time, and is still considered a favorite among old and new gamers alike! Countless Mario games have come and gone since this title was released in the Fall of 1990, but none comes close (other then perhaps Super Mario World on the SNES) to this jam-packed Mario classic!

And there you have it, Infinite Earths fans! Our Top 10 Best Retro Games of all time! Granted, these may not be everyone's favorites. Perhaps you wanted other entries on the list like Super Mario World, Sonic & Knuckles, Star Fox, F-Zero or Out Run. And granted, these are all great titles that should be considered classics. Yet, the 10 on our list are all there for reasons each of us here holds dear and, truth be told, whether they may not be your favorites, we all have to admit all 10 of these chosen titles are great examples of classic console games!

Until next time, Infinite Earths fans!

Hollywood Collectibles Reveals Life Size Total Recall Synth Statues

I am going to be frank here and say I didn't like the remake of Total Recall. Nothing personal, and I wasn't comparing it to the classic Arnold Schwarzenegger film. I just didn't like it.

     Wellmost of it!

One of the cooler aspects of the film were the Stormtrooper-esque Synthetics, or Synths. I mean, they just looked so cool, they really have an awesome look to them! Now, we've received word that Hollywood Collectibles will be making an extremely limited run of Synth Life Size Statues. They will be available in both black (Battalion Commander) and white (Synth Officer) and will be limited to just 25 pieces each! They are highly detailed and stand 6' 6" in height! Both versions of the Synth Life Size Statue are available for purchase now!

     From Hollywood Collectibles -

We are proud to present our Lifesize Synth statue, from the visually stunning movie Total Recall. The Synths (Synthetics) are the relentless, emotionless enforcers of the USB’s dystopian society; their robotic Federal Police Rapid Response Units.

The Lifesize Synth stands an imposing 6 ft 6” tall, and is intricately detailed. It would make a very imposing guardian of anyone’s Theater room or collection room!

Again, these awesome, highly detailed pieces are available for purchase now and will set you back $399.99 each! Yep, it's pricy, but come on, these things look so awesome! Be sure to make up your mind quick however, these are very limited pieces! But, they're sure to look awesome wherever you display them!

Canada Post to Unveil Superman Stamps at Fan Expo

Fan Expo Canada kicks off today in Toronto and we can't wait to get there! One very exciting reveal that will be taking place over the four day period will come from Canada Post, who are set to unveil a series of stamps honoring the Canadian roots of the Man of Steel himself, Superman!

Yes, Superman was created in 1933 by teenagers Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster while they were living in Cleveland, Ohio USA. However, Joe Shuster was actually born in Toronto, Ontario Canada, where he lived until the age of 10. While there, he worked as a newspaper boy for The Toronto Daily Star, who's building, interestingly enough, served as inspiration for The Daily Planet.

The thing about Superman is that he is like the ultimate hyphenated citizen. He is a Canadian-American-Kryptonian superhero,” says Canada Post spokeswoman Keisha McIntosh-Siung. “He’s really a timeless hero.”

The limited-edition series of five stamps, which will go on sale September 10, celebrates the 75th anniversary of Superman’s debut in Action Comics #1. Each stamp will feature artwork from different eras.

Until next time, Infinite Earths fans!

The Marvel Experience Coming Soon

Marvel is teaming up with the producers behind the poorly received Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark Broadway show to bring fans the new $30-Million Marvel Experience.

From Orlando to London to Dubai, one of the hottest franchises in the attractions industry is the Marvel Universe. And now Hero Ventures, a Los Angeles based entertainment company, announced today that it is teaming up with Marvel Entertainment to create “The Marvel Experience,” an innovative, traveling experience, featuring dozens of Marvel’s iconic Super Heroes. This attraction will appeal to a multi-generational audience and will leverage state-of-the-art interactive and multimedia technology, including a 4D motion ride and original 3D animated features, allowing fans to be a part of the action. The tour comes to life in 2014.

The Marvel Experience is a “first-person” Super Hero adventure in which audiences step into the Marvel Universe to become a part of the story and the action. Innovative tour elements include a one-of-a-kind, traveling dome complex the size of two football fields developed exclusively by Hero Ventures. In addition to the 4D motion ride and 3D animated features, other components will include digitally projected animation, motion-comic origin stories, virtual reality and holographic simulations, original merchandise and integrated social media touch points all carefully woven into the rich narrative story line.

“Hero Ventures is developing a themed entertainment concept that we expect will be a transformative, traveling destination that will deliver to fans and families an exciting, groundbreaking and unique experience,” says Marvel’s VP of Business Development, Sean Haran.

The characters and stories of the Marvel Universe are beloved around the world by ages young and old as seen with the recent global box office records for Marvel’s The Avengers and Marvel’s Iron Man 3.

“The dynamic creative elements we’re developing are going to enable anyone to feel like a Super Hero like Spider-Man or Captain America,” says Hero Ventures’ CEO Rick Licht. “We couldn’t be more excited about our partnership with Marvel. Kids and adults are going to be absolutely inspired, empowered and thrilled from start to finish, with an immersive experience that is not just memorable, but unforgettable!”

“The Marvel Universe just keeps getting hotter, as seen by the massive world-wide box office and merchandise success of their characters,” says Michael Cohl. “We can’t wait to bring our Marvel vision to life in this first-of-its-kind event.” Cohl, former Live Nation Chairman and legendary live event impresario, along with his Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark co-producer and PRG founder Jeremiah “Jere” Harris, will serve as lead producers.

Sounds neat, we'll give it that and, with $30-Million dollars in backing and Marvel's full support, there really is no reason why the Marvel Experience shouldn't be successful. Yet, we just can't ignore the fact that the team involved with that horrible Spider-Man Broadway show will be involved.

Perhaps we're jumping the gun here. Truth be told, only time will tell how successful this new undertaking will be. Still, we can't help but feel somewhat cautious...

Until next time, Infinite Earths fans!

ArtFX Reveals G1-Style Goldbug

Fans have been demanding a G1-stlye Bumblebee figure for quite some time now. For the most part, we're sick of these countless Camaro Bee's fighting for space on the pegs and never being bought. Okay, the idea of Bumblebee transforming into a Camaro may have been cool when the first Transformers film was released back in the summer of 2007, but since then, Hasbro has oversaturated the market with these things and we're just sick and tired of looking at them!

True Transformers fans want Bee back in the form he belongs in, that of a classic Volkswagen Beetle, an alt. mode the character hasn't seen since the glory days of G1. Apparently, it has been difficult for Hasbro to secure the rights to the iconic vehicle as Volkswagen appears to want nothing to do with the Transformers brand these days.

Yet, that seems like it is all about to change thanks to...ArtFX!

That's right, Transformers fans, the company behind some of the most amazing statues on the market today is about to shock the world with the release of their ArtFX Goldbug figure this September. Yes, this is not Bumblebee, but rather his reformatted form after being critically injured during a battle to defend Autobot City in the fourth season of the classic 80's cartoon we all know and love. And so what? Look at it!

How awesome is this thing!??! We're being told Goldbug is fully transformable and will even come with a weapon, drone and Chip Chase figure! There is no doubt this piece will sell out pretty quickly judging by the amount of fans, ourselves included, who've wanted to see the classic VW Beetle alt. mode return to our collections after far too long an absence!

This awesome piece is slated for release in September of this year and will set you back $56.99, but come on! How long have we been wanting something like this? And now, ArtFX has come to the rescue! After all these years of waiting, $56.99 seems like nothing to add such a classic looking, fan-demanded piece to your Transformers shelves!

Again, this piece is sure to sell out quick, so be sure to pop by and pre-order one of these bad boys from our friends over at:

Don't let this one get away!
