Lucasfilm Announces Episode VII Filmmaking Team

The title pretty much says it all. Lucasfilm has announced the team that will be bringing the next installment of the Star Wars franchise to a movie theatre near you! Read the official announcement below...

As Episode VII continues pre-production, Lawrence Kasdan and director J.J. Abrams have assumed screenwriting duties for the film. Kasdan, who has been serving as a consultant on the film, is a veteran of several classic Lucasfilm productions, writing the screenplay for Raiders of the Lost Ark and serving as co-screenwriter for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Acclaimed director and screenwriter Abrams' credits include Super 8, Mission: Impossible III, Fringe, and Lost.

"I am very excited about the story we have in place and thrilled to have Larry and J.J. working on the script," states Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy. "There are very few people who fundamentally understand the way a Star Wars story works like Larry, and it is nothing short of incredible to have him even more deeply involved in its return to the big screen. J.J. of course is an incredible storyteller in his own right. Michael Arndt has done a terrific job bringing us to this point and we have an amazing filmmaking and design team in place already prepping for production."

Location scouting, production design, casting, and costume design are already underway on Episode VII. A team of gifted artists are working to bring the latest installment of the Star Wars saga, including director of photography Dan Mindel (Mission: Impossible III, Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness), production designers Rick Carter (Lincoln, Avatar, Forrest Gump) and Darren Gilford (Oblivion, TRON: Legacy), costume designer Michael Kaplan (Star Trek Into Darkness, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Fight Club),special effects supervisor Chris Corbould (Skyfall, The Dark Knight Rises, Inception), sound designer Ben Burtt (Lincoln, Wall-E, Star Wars: Episodes I-VI), re-recording mixer Gary Rydstrom (Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, Toy Story, Mission: Impossible -Ghost Protocol), supervising sound editor Matthew Wood (Star Trek Into Darkness, The Master, There Will Be Blood) of Skywalker Sound, and visual effects supervisor Roger Guyett (Star Trek Into Darkness, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith) of Industrial Light & Magic. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, with Tommy Harper (Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Jack Ryan, Star Trek Into Darkness) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds) serving as executive producers. John Williams is returning to score Star Wars: Episode VII.

Shooting is scheduled to begin Spring 2014 at Pinewood Studios for an expected 2015 release.

Marvel Announces New Anime Series Starring The Avengers

Disney and Marvel have announced a new anime series titled Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers that will launch in Japan next year. A North American release date has yet to be mentioned, but chances are good it'll follow this press release at some point. You can read the full press release below...

The Walt Disney Company (Japan) Ltd. announced today that it will produce the first Japanese Marvel animated television series targeted at boys. Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers is based on Marvel’s most popular team of Super Heroes, The Avengers and will premiere nationwide on terrestrial television in spring 2014.

Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers will be produced by Nerima-ku, Tokyo-based Toei Animation Co., Ltd., which has produced multiple successful animated series for kids in Japan. Taito-ku, Tokyo-based Bandai Co., Ltd., which has a highly successful track record with major titles, will be responsible for character merchandising. The three companies will collaborate in creating a fully localized Japanese series as well as providing a lineup of attractive products and merchandise targeting the boys market.

The story will revolve around how The Avengers – Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and the Hulk together with the help of Spider-Man and a group of teens, will harness their respective fighting skills and superhuman powers to foil Loki’s scheme to take over the world. Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers will target boys in the 6-12 age group.

Walt Disney Japan, through its local content strategy—delivering content tailored to meet the needs of local consumers—is actively localizing content to fit the tastes and sensibilities of Japanese audiences. Though the company has produced and broadcast several localized programs, from the animated short-form series Fireball in 2008, Disney’s first animated series produced entirely in Japan, to Stitch!, which stars the popular Disney character with a change of setting from Hawaii to Okinawa. Marvel Disk Wars: The Avengers will be its first animated television series specifically targeted at boys and will delight Japanese viewers with an entirely new action-packed storyline that unfolds before their eyes in a high quality 2D animated format. Most recently, this Super Hero team was seen in the 2012 live-action movie, Marvel’s The Avengers, with a world-wide box office revenue that exceeded $1.5 billion and was the third-top grossing film of all time.

Through this collaboration, Marvel, Walt Disney Japan, Japan’s top animation studio Toei Animation, and character merchandising leader Bandai will together leverage their respective strengths to deliver a television series for nationwide broadcast and a range of merchandise that is sure to breathe new life into the boys market in Japan.

Mattel's Last DCU Hurrah! - Part 2

Continuing on the theme from yesterday, we'll now take a look at the second Mattel based DCU retail line that will, sadly, soon be reaching its end - DC Unlimited. Unlike the Batman Unlimited line that accompanied it on store shelves, DC Unlimited focused on a wider scope of DC Universe characters - well, for the most part...

In the second wave of DC Unlimited figures, Mattel was successful in sneaking another unique Batman figure within its ranks, this particular figure based off the newly launched Injustice: Gods Among Us video game! The Injustice Batman features no accessories, but still has a very unique look to him, as do all the characters within the video game's roster. Packaging is what you'd expect, with some nice Injustice: Gods Among Us promo art decorating the sides. Articulation is standard, minus the ab crunch, for a DCU figure. There are no major joint issues and the paint is clean overall. Again, this may be another Batman figure, but it has such a unique appearance to him that fans of The Dark Knight are sure to want him on their shelves!

Other Injustice figures would find their way into the ranks of the DC Unlimited line, but again, although the line had some promise with all the different types of characters Mattel was throwing in, certain figures fans demanded, like Injustice Green Arrow, are never going to get made due to the fact that the end of the 6" DCU Mattel figure is slowly coming to an end! And that, as mentioned yesterday, is a true shame.

But, as mentioned above, other Injustice characters would find there way into the DC Unlimited line! Superman and Joker would be the next two game based characters to make their way to store shelves! Each features a new sculpt based off their look in the popular video game, with pretty standard DCU articulation (minus the ab crunch and waist swivel) and paint applications. What is very disappointing however, especially in the case of the Joker, is the total lack of accessories once again. I mean, Joker has no powers, neither does Batman, still neither came with any accessories to speak of. And it is not like Mattel had no reference material to go on when including accessories with these figures. Batman I can let slide, but Joker? Give him a mallet, a crowbar, a pipe, something! While this may be a unique take on the Clown Prince of Crime, something just feels off with this one having no accessories whatsoever.

Then came Superman, who, like Batman, actually has a rather nice look to him. Sporting an over-the-shoulders style cape, larger S-shield and knee-high boots, this is perhaps the most unique looking Superman figure ever offered by Mattel. The paint is nice and while articulation may be slightly hindered due to the style of the boots, cape and absence of an ab crunch, this is still a very nice looking representation of the Man of Steel. No accessories again, but we are talking about Superman here, so we'll let that slide.

The next wave of DC Unlimited figures, which have recently arrived here in Canada, strayed away from the Injustice video game and instead, gave fans a chance to add two New 52 characters to their collections. Now, we know not everyone is a fan of the New 52 reboot, but the characters Mattel has given us up until now (Hawkman, Wonder Woman ect.) have certainly been very nice choices. Sure, it would've been nice to see a few more villains tossed into the mix, but what can you do?

The first figure introduced was New 52 Aquaman, based off his look in Geoff Johns' phenomenal The Trench storyline. If you haven't picked that graphic novel up yet, do it now! The New 52 Aquaman certainly isn't your daddy's King of Atlantis! Anyways, the figure looks great! Paint is beautiful, albeit, somewhat plain. He comes complete with his signature trident, which, again, is plain in appearence, especially when compared to the DCUC Wave 2 Aquaman's weapon of choice. Still, I prefer it over the flashier DCUC version, so I have no compaints. This figure is all around awesome with no paint, joint or accessory issues to speak of! A great addition to the line that really could've used a New 52 Black Manta companion piece in the line to go along with him.

And finally, rounding out the New 52 figures from Mattel is the tyrannical monster known as Darkseid! DC Collectibles released their own version of this character prior to Mattel, and that figure, while pretty much just a mass of plastic, is a wonder to behold! Mattel's offering does leave something to be desired, with odd looking proportions that make him look way to small compared to his comic book counterpart. Still, while he may look a little odd, Mattel has done a nice job on the paint work, including lots of nice little details here and there. Plus, the DC Collectibles Darkseid may be a little too expensive for some fans, thus the Mattel version is a nice, better articulated, second option thanks to Mattel. Again, as with most figures included in this retail line, Darkseid suffers from a total lack of accessories. This isn't totally bothersome in that Darkseid uses his strength and powers more often then not in the comics, but I must admit, a Mother Box would've been a very nice pack-in for this piece.

And there you have it, Infinite Earths fans! While the days of the 6" Mattel DCU figure are indeed coming to a close, there are still some figures out there that fans can add to the ranks of their collections before it's all over. In fact, another wave of DC Unlimited figures should be hitting Canada very shortly and include Injustice Green Lantern aaaannnddd a repainted Injustice Batman... Okay, not the most exciting conclusion to this line, but I guess it is better then nothing, huh?

The figures listed above are nice choices for fans, but if your area is anything like ours, pickings from Mattel's DCU lines may be slim to non-existent, so save yourself countless hours searching at retail and grab the ones you want now from our friends at

Mattel's Last DCU Hurrah! - Part 1

Well, aside from 4 figures being released through Matty Collector starting in the Spring of 2014, although it pains us to say it, it appears as though the days of the 6" Mattel based DCU figure have come to their end. Spring will see Aquaman, Ice, Superboy & Robin released through Matty Collector and only Arkham Origins Batman and Deathstroke are coming down the pipe in Mattel's Batman Unlimited retail line.

But, that still doesn't mean that there are no more great Mattel DCU pieces out there on the market. In fact, some of Mattel's best Batman figures were just recently released here in Canada - let's take a look at what our team is dubbing Mattel's Last DCU Hurrah!

First, from the Batman Unlimited retail line, we have Dark Knight Returns Batman! Based off his appearance in the classic 80's Frank Miller graphic novel, that was recently adapted into a DC Animated Original film by Warner Bros, this has to be one of the coolest Batman figures on the market! Sporting a MUCH bulkier build, this isn't the Mattel Batman you're used to! He features numerous points of articulation, a superb paint job and, seriously, how awesome is that scowling face? Accessory-wise, this piece comes with an equally large batarang, showing this aged crime fighter has no intentions of slowing down with age! The packaging is standard for Mattel's current DCU offerings and sports a bio on the reverse and some really great Dark Knight Returns artwork straight from the pages of Frank Miller's graphic novel. Available in the currently circulating Wave 2 of the Batman Unlimited Wave, this figure is, without a doubt, one of the best Batman figures Mattel has ever released to the public!

It's such a shame that Mattel won't be releasing any more 6" characters from Frank Miller's graphic novel! Would've loved to have seen a Dark Knight Returns Superman, Green Arrow or Mutant Leader figure, but chances are those will never be happening now.

Also available in the second wave of Batman Unlimited retail figures is Planet X Batman, which some will likely remember from Tony S. Daniels Batman R.I.P or the rather charming episode of The Brave and the Bold, which saw this particular character voiced by the great Kevin Conroy!

This figure sports one of the oddest costumes throughout the Dark Knight's history and comes complete with a baseball bat and Planet X version of the always hilarious Bat-Mite! Built off the regular Batman sculpt we've seen numerous times from Mattel, the figure sports a rather spectacular cape, showing off lots of rips and tattered edges. Also, as with Dark Knight Returns Batman, how great are the face sculpts chosen for these two figures? Top notch or what? This is certainly a Batman you really don't want to mess with! A great alternative for fans of any of the classic DC alternate universe stories! The packaging is the same as others in the line and features some great artwork from Tony S. Daniels graphic novel Batman R.I.P.

Now, we come to the third wave of Batman Unlimited figures. These will just be hitting Canada now, so keep your eyes peeled for another pair of unique Batman figures - the first of which is based off the character's look in the current Beware the Batman CGI cartoon. The new design is quite unique and captures the essence of the new design seen in the series. While articulation is present, it is somewhat limited in comparison to other Batman figures Mattel has given us. Still, this in no way means this is a bad figure. The packaging sports some nice images of Batman from the show, but for some reason, no accessories are included, a real shame, considering this really is Mattel's last DCU Hurrah! But, I digress.

Again, this was a show where Mattel had lot's of potential for additions to the Batman Unlimited line! We here at Infinite Earths would've loved a Silver Monkey, Cypher or Lady Shiva added to this line - again, I digress. This is a very nice piece with no sticky joint issues and some beautifully crisp and neat paint work! Another nice addition to any Batman collection!

Finally, rounding out the Batman Unlimited retail line is Vampire Batman. This is not a favorite of ours, but fans of Red Rain will no doubt be very happy with this figure. He features a thinner sculpt then most Batman figures, a character specific batarang and rather grotesque facial expression, reminding fans of this piece's Elseworld roots.

Paint is clean, with no runs, smears or blotches to speak of and articulation is plentiful and what we've come to expect from a Mattel DCU action figure. Some nice Elseworld artwork decorates the packaging. Again, like the Beware the Batman figure, Vampire Batman could've been the start of some really neat 6" Elseworld Mattel figures, like Gotham by Gaslight Catwoman. Sigh, it's a real shame Mattel folded up shop in the 6" DCU department, there was so much that still needed to be done.

This is just a small taste of what figures fans of Mattel's DCU offerings can still grab at retail. Each may be a new take on the timeless character of Batman, but each is truly unique and each deserves to be a part of any DCU collection, even that Vampire Batman. Tune in tomorrow when we take a look at the other Mattel DCU retail line reaching it's finish - DC Unlimited!

But, hold on - no doubt some of these have sparked an interest in you, dear reader! And, if your area is anything like ours, no doubt DCU pickings from Mattel are somewhat sparse. Well, have no fear, dear fan, our awesome sponsor has you covered! Head on over now and snag these awesome Batman figures from our friends at

Michael Bay Addresses Hong Kong Incident

Just a quick little update for all of you Transformers fans out there. This morning, we got word from Hong Kong that director Michael Bay and his crew were attacked by some individuals while filming scenes for the next Transformers film, Age of Extinction yesterday. The report we got claimed Mr. Bay was injured slightly, but refused medical attention and went right on filming.

Since then, more and more details have been added to the report, which now states that one of the attackers hit Mr. Bay in the face with an air conditioning unit. Translations were rough and reports were mixed, but now we know what happened thanks to Michael Bay himself.

Dropping by his official site today, the director had the following to say regarding the incident that took place yesterday in Hong Kong during filming...

"Hi, it's Michael.

Yes, the story is being passed around is not all true! Yes, some drugged up guys were being belligerent asses to my crew for hours in the morning of our first shoot day in Hong Kong. On guy rolled metal carts into some of my actors trying to shake us down for thousands of dollars to not play his loud music or hit us with bricks.

Every vendor where we shot got paid a fair price for our inconvenience, but he wanted four times that amount. I personally told this man and his friends to forget it we were not going to let him extort us. He didn't like that answer. So an hour later he came by my crew as we were shooting, carrying a long air conditioner unit. He walked right up to me and tried to smack my face, but I ducked threw the air unit on the floor and pushed him away. That's when the security jumped on him. But it took seven big guys to subdue him. It was like a Zombie in Brad Pitt's movie World War Z—he lifted seven guys up and tried to bite them. He actually bit into one of the guards Nike shoe, insane. Thank god it was an Air Max, the bubble popped, but the toe was saved.

Then it took fifteen Hong Kong cops in riot gear to deal with these punks. In all, four guys were arrested for assaulting the officers.

After that, we had a great day shooting here in Hong Kong. The place could be better."

Some people, huh? We're just glad to hear everyone is okay and that the matter has been taken care of! Until next time, Infinite Earths fans!

Dark Horse Rebooting Aliens, Predator & AVP

Let's face it, reboots are kind of a big thing right now, and it seems as though everyone is getting in on it. From DC Comics New 52 to talk of new Fantastic 4 and Daredevil films from Marvel Studios, we need to face the fact that rebooting popular franchises is happening, and in a big way. So, when Dark Horse Comics announced yesterday that they would be rebooting the popular Aliens and Predator franchises, it really didn't come as much of a surprise.

But, we still were excited!! What follows is a slight rundown of what fans can expect from the newly rebooted franchise in 2014...

. 2014 will mark the year these popular sci-fi horror franchises face the reboot, after which Aliens, Predator, Aliens vs. Predator and the first Prometheus comic title will come together in a single comic continuity.

Aliens

. For the Aliens title, we're told that all four films in the series will be considered canon, even though nothing that happened with Ripley and Co. will be directly referenced within the rebooted title. Still, we're assured that nothing within the new Aliens comic will contradict or conflict with anything that has come before it, so far as the film series is considered. As such, the new Aliens title will feature an entirely new cast of characters. Some of the characters we've seen in the past will occasionally be referenced, but none of them will be appearing on-stage.

. In regards to the tone of this new title, editor Scott Allie says they'll be sticking closer to the horror tone of the first film. Regular people will have their lives turned upside down when they encounter these creatures - they will not be soldiers who are prepared to battle the threat when it arises.

Predator

. In regards to the new Predator title, again, the three standalone films will be considered canon. Also, like the Aliens title, Predator will focus on a new cast of characters, so don't expect Dutch to be showing up any time soon. Dark Horse says fans of the films and the original Predator titles will love what they have in store for 2014, including a story involving an older Predator, way past his prime, looking for one last great hunt!

. Tone-wise, we're told that the most important thing to the guys at Dark Horse is to honor what came before and simply tell the best stories possible that fans will just love.

AVP

. Interestingly, we've also been told that, while the solo Aliens and Predator films will be considered canon for their respective titles, the same will not be the case for the new Aliens vs. Predator title coming in 2014. With AVP, Dark Horse says that, while they like the AVP films, they wanted to start with a clean slate for the new title and build their own take on these mythical face-offs.

. Human characters within the new AVP title will not simply be there as monster fodder, but just as important as the battling creatures within. AVP will also be different in tone then the new Aliens and Predator solo titles, focusing more on revenge and violence and bloodshed as the two warring factions battle it out for dominance.

. There will also be some Prometheus-adjacent things in AVP, but those things are being kept close to the chest right now. Some of the lesser touched on points from the Prometheus film will also be touched on in AVP and they're currently not ruling out an Aliens vs. Predators vs. Engineers smack down.

Prometheus

. The Prometheus film will be considered canon, will focus on new characters and have a strong Engineer presence. Also, the theme of meeting ones creator will be strongly explored in this new title.

. The new comic will also focus on how the Engineers interact with other species, including human, Alien and Predator. Where they clash, where they find human ground, ect.

. A lot of collaboration between writers will take place over the course of these new Dark Horse titles in an effort to write strong, individual stories that will sync up and interact with one another. This is something Dark Horse says they are really looking forward to and hope the fans are as well...

Well, there you have it, Infinite Earths fans! Lots of awesome action seems to be on the way in these newly rebooted sci-fi franchises from Dark Horse! How do you feel about what's coming? Ourselves, again, we're pretty excited. Sure, not all reboots are a good thing (the Amazing Spider-Man films stand out as an example here), but with everything that has been added to this vast universe since 1979, we feel this reboot could actually be a very good, and very exciting event!

Look for the rebooted titles, and the new Prometheus comic, to hit shelves in 2014!
Until next time, Infinite Earths fans!
