Two Superheroes Join Supergirl

Two former Kryptonians have signed on to the upcoming CBS Supergirl series. Dean Cain, who played Clark Kent/Superman on Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, and Helen Slater, who starred as Kara/Supergirl in the 1984 film Supergirl, have joined the DC Entertainment series from Greg Berlanti, Ali Adler and Andrew Kreisberg.

Both are set to appear in the upcoming pilot episode, with the details of their mysterious roles being kept under wraps for the time.

The news follows a similar casting strategy from The Flash, which enlisted both John Wesley Shipp and Amanda Pays, two actors from the 90's Flash series that aired on CBS, for secret roles in the Arrow spin-off.

Cain and Slater are the latest additions to a cast that also includes  Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, David Harewood as Hank Henshaw, Chyler Leigh as Alexandra "Alex" Danvers and recurring player Laura Benanti as Kara Zor-El.

Who do you guys think Cain and Slater will be playing in the upcoming show?

Denis Villeneuve to Direct Blade Runner 2

Alcon Entertainment is in talks with French-Canadian director Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners) to helm the upcoming sequel to Blade Runner, which will take place several decades following the 1982 original.

Filming on the sequel is set for Summer 2016 and will see Ridely Scott joining the project as executive producer. Hampton Fancher, co-writer of the original, co-wrote the new screenplay with Michael Green based an idea by Fancher and Scott.

In addition, Harrison Ford has been officially confirmed for the sequel.

“We are honoured that Harrison is joining us on this journey with Denis Villeneuve, who is a singular talent, as we experienced personally on Prisoners,” said Kosove and Johnson.
“Hampton and Michael, with Ridley Scott, have crafted a uniquely potent and faithful sequel to one of the most universally celebrated films of all time and we couldn’t be more thrilled with this amazing, creative team.”

Fans will remember that Ford played the lead character, Rick Deckard, in the 1982 original, which was directed by Ridley Scott.

Denis Villeneuve is also known for directing Sicario and Polytechnique.

Review: Justice League: Throne of Atlantis

Aquaman, the punchline of every joke within the DC Comics Universe, recently underwent a 21st Century reboot thanks to Geoff Johns. Going from a laughable afterthought to the warrior king of Atlantis, Johns gave ample proof that his Aquaman was not the Dolphin-riding chump of yesteryear. Does the newest entry in the DC Animated Original Movie line-up stay true to Johns' vision of the classic comic character? Indeed it does!

Picking up where last year's Justice League: War left off, the new film is pretty much a by the books origin story that introduces the character of Aquaman into the New 52 version of the DC Animated Universe. Wonderfully voiced by Matt Lanter (Star Wars: The Clone Wars), Arthur Curry is presented as a depressed and dismal soul following the death of his father. We soon discover, however, that he's more than he appears. Equipped with super strength and knife-proof skin, it is quite clear that this is the type of guy you don't want to be messing with.

As the film progresses, fans learn more of Arthur's childhood and his mysterious connection to the fabled city of Atlantis, but this results in the other members of the newly formed Justice League taking the backseat on this adventure. However, with this being an origin story focusing on Aquaman, we're fine with that fact.

This is not to say that said story is without flaws. When the film begins, we feel sorry for Arthur given his lonely plight following the death of his father. Yet, as things progress, and he begins to discover who he really is, things seem to move along rather more quickly than they should have. Before we know it, Arthur has embraced his destiny of being the king of Atlantis and is delivering empowering Russell Crowe-esque speeches in an effort to bridge peace between the surface world and that of his underwater kingdom. But, we do realize that the movie only had a 75-minute run-time. As a result, some things were going to feel rushed with this one from the get-go, but we're willing to let it slide.

There are still plenty of things to love about this film. For one thing, we are, once again, treated to some interesting dynamics within the ranks of the Justice League. Whether it's Batman and Green Lantern butting heads, Superman and Wonder Woman starting a romantic relationship, or Cyborg and Shazam continuing their bro-mance, this film features some great chemistry between League members. So, while they are under-utilized this time around, we're still treated to plenty of the same great dialogue that made Justice League: War so top notch!

In addition, director Ethan Spaulding (Batman: Assault on Arkham) has once again crafted a quality DCU animated film featuring superb animation, supreme voice acting and an action-packed climax that, may not be as big in scale as that seen in Justice League: War, is still plenty of fun.

Each part within the film has, once again, been cast extremely well. Made up mostly of talent returning from Justice League: War, including Jason O'Mara (Batman), Sean Astin (Shazam), Shemar Moore (Cyborg), Christopher Gorham (Flash) and George Newbern (Steve Trevor), the cast also includes the likes of DCU vets Jerry O'Connell (Justice League) as Superman, Rosario Dawson (Wonder Woman) as Wonder Woman and Nathan Fillion (Green Lantern: Emerald Knights) as Green Lantern. Joining Matt Lanter in the Atlantean department the cast also includes Sam Witwer (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) as Orm, Sumalee Montano (Beware the Batman) as Mera and Harry Lennix (Man of Steel) as Black Manta. Again, the cast is supreme, and each does a great job of delivering their parts in a full, dynamic manner.

So, while Justice League: Throne of Atlantis is not without flaws, it's another great entry in the DC Animated Universe. Screenwriter Heath Corson has taken Geoff Johns' source material and condensed it into a 75-minute origin story that does exactly what it is supposed to do - introduce the New 52 version of Aquaman into the DC Animated Universe. It's fun, action-packed and beautifully presented in a way fans are sure to enjoy.

Honestly, this one needs to be in your library. While it may not be the best of the best, it's still a great addition to the DC Animated Universe. If you're a fan of Geoff Johns' work, the New 52 Animated Universe or quality animation that features great voice acting and an overall top notch presentation, than Justice League: Throne of Atlantis is for you! It won't take long for you to see why this Aquaman ain't your daddy's King of the Seven Seas.

Look for Justice League: Throne of Atlantis on Blu-Ray and DVD Now!

Superhero Team-Up Spinoff In Works At CW

Well, it sounds as though the DC Television Universe is set to expand even more in the very near future. Apparently, a potential new drama series is in the works at the CW, that will take place in the same universe as Arrow and The Flash, which will feature several fan-favorite recurring characters from both shows.

Reports indicate that the network has teamed up with Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg and Marc Guggenheim for the project, which is eyed for next season with such names attached as Brandon Routh, Wentworth Miller, Caity Lotz and Victor Garber.

The unnamed show, currently in development, is described as a superhero team-up show. Routh, Miller and Garber will reprise their popular DC Comics characters.

With Sara Lance being dead in Arrow at this time, it is unclear how Caity Lotz will feature in the new show.

With the show being in the early stages of development, it is possible more characters from Arrow and The Flash may cross over to the new spinoff.

In addition, it is rumored that the project will include three major DC Comics characters who have never appeared in a TV series before.

Not part of the current pilot cycle, it sounds as though this one may end up going straight to series, which is not surprising given the creative auspices and talent involved.

Whatever the case may be, a superhero team-up series sounds like a winning formula to us!

More info as it becomes available.

Top 10 Toy Fair Reveals - 2015

It's hard to believe Toy Fair 2015 kicked off in New York two weeks ago already. Two weeks since the top names in the industry converged on the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center to unveil a plethora of plastic perfection set to send collectors into a frenzy as they await new offerings from brands both old and new. Two weeks since we stalked up on coffee and prepared to cover the event over four amazing days. Yep, Toy Fair has come and gone for another year, but we're not done with the 2015 show just yet.

Once again, we enter our Top 10 Toy Fair Reveals, a countdown we started two years ago in an effort to separate the very best and most exciting new figures from all the rest. Again, this is no easy task. This year was another historical milestone for the New York Toy Fair, which showcased some of the most amazing plastic we have ever laid eyes on. From Hasbro's Transformers Combiner Wars line, to the exciting Icons series coming from DC Collectibles, 2015 looks to be another exciting year for toy collectors.

But, which ones stood above the rest, you ask? Well, you've come to the right place if that is the answer you seek. It took two long weeks to compile the two lists we will be featuring over the next few days, but in the end, and after far too many late nights comforted by the warmth of constant caffeine, we've come away with, what we feel, are the Top 10 Toy Reveals of 2015.

Let's take a Look...

#10 - ReAction Arrow Figures (Funko) - Since the line debuted in 2013, it seems as though Funko's series of retro ReAction figures can do no wrong. Taking pop culture characters, both old and new, and giving them the classic toy treatment is nothing short of pure genius in our books. Sure, they may only feature 5-points of articulation and basic paintwork. And they may not really feature the proper likeness of the character they are modeled after, but, for kids that grew up in the 70's, 80's and 90's, these are a welcome trip down memory lane. The Arrow assortment, based off the hit DC Entertainment show running on the CW Network, will hit retail this coming July and will feature 3.75" renditions of the Arrow, Canary, Deathstroke and the Dark Archer. Why did this assortment make our list over all the other equally impressive ReAction figures Funko unveiled at the show? Firstly, because we're huge Arrow fans and secondly, because Funko showed that it won't just be making these awesome action figures based off of classic TV and film properties. Nothing is safe from the ReAction treatment, but, we're okay with that!

Why We Love It: Classic-stlye action figures based off a hit DC Entertainment TV Show - need we say more? Plus, what a fun trip down memory lane for kids of the 70's, 80's and 90's.

#9 - Marvel Infinite Series Ant-Man Set (Hasbro) - This year, after far too long a wait, Marvel's Ant-Man will finally arrive in theaters. In an effort to prep fans for all the pint-sized fun, Hasbro revealed a brand new Ant-Man set that will be arriving in their 3.75" Marvel Infinite line this coming summer. Not only will the set include a 3.75" action figure of Ant-Man Scott Lang, but also included as part of the set will be an in-scale winged ant that the hero can ride into battle! The whole thing will set you back $19.99, but if you're looking for something fun and unique to add to your Marvel display, then look no further! The Marvel Infinite Series Ant-Man Set takes the #9 spot on our list this year for - as mentioned above - being fun and unique, something far too many collectible action figures are not these days!

Why We Love It: The set takes something fun and unique about a character many are worried could flop at the box office and turns it into something collectors and fans are sure to love.

#8 - Play Arts Kai Variant Spider-Man (Square Enix) - Earlier this month, it was announced that Stan Lee's famous wall-crawler, Spider-Man, would FINALLY be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As if that wasn't exciting enough, those horrible Amazing Spider-Man films with Andrew Garfield are being axed and Spidey is, once again, getting a clean slate on the big screen. We couldn't be happier about this and feel that the #8 entry on our list is the perfect way to everything being right within the Marvel Universe - for now. Check out the Variant Play Arts Kai Spider-Man. While we don't have a price or release date on this one, a quick once over will reveal why we feel this bad boy belongs on this list. He's fully articulated, loaded with accessories, wearing a fine coat of paint and he embodies the classic design of Spider-Man with a modern 21st Century twist that only Square Enix could possibly pull off. This one is sure to be a favorite amongst True Believers as more and more news surrounding Marvel Studio's plans for Spidey comes to light.

Why We Love It: The ultimate Spider-Man figure for the ultimate Spider-Man fan! And the perfect way to celebrate 'ol Web Heads long awaiting induction within the ranks of the MCU.

#7 - Play Arts Kai Variant Iron Man (Square Enix) - 2015 looks to be a big year for Marvel, both at the movies and in the toy isle. Case and point, the Variant Play Arts Kai Iron Man. Featuring an all-new streamlined physique, this re-imagined take on 'ol Shellhead incorporates classic colors with a stealthier, polished design. In addition, the battle-worn paint gives off a nice, realistic feel to the figure. Iron Man comes fully articulated and loaded with special effect parts, including palm repulsor rays, boot jet emissions, micro-missiles projecting from the thighs, back flaps and expandable air brakes on the legs. Yep, much like Tony Stark's armor in the comics, this one is fully loaded! The Play Arts Kai Variant Iron Man figure comes in at #7 on our list for giving us an impressive re-imagining of the classic Avenger.

Why We Love It: Only Square Enix could take a beloved, classic and time-tested character like Iron Man and update him in such a way that fan boys wouldn't rise up and cause a revolt. Beautiful. Simply Beautiful.

#6 - DC Icons Flash (DC Collectibles) - Coming this Fall, the DC Icons line from DC Collectibles will feature  6", fully articulated action figures depicting classic characters from throughout the DC Comics universe. One of the figures making up the first assortment hitting in November is brand new version of the Flash as seen in the classic 1980's Crisis on Infinite Earths arc. He will feature the updated articulation first seen on the Arkham Origins and Designer Series lines, and will include a Speed Force treadmill accessory. This is a welcome surprise, given that past action figures of the Flash really aren't known for including any additional accessories. We feel the DC Icons line in itself was one of the most exciting reveals of Toy Fair 2015, and we can't wait to see what DC Collectibles has planned for the line in the future, but Flash here takes the #6 spot for three simple reasons: 1) the figure includes a unique and iconic accessory, 2) the character is super popular right now thanks to the success of the CW spin-off and 3) this year marks 75 years since the Scarlet Speedster first sped into the pages of DC Comics!

Why We Love it: Where to begin? 6" scale means it'll fit in with DCUC figures, the figure features an iconic design and a unique accessory from Barry Allen's history, it will feature the updated articulation first seen on Arkham Origins and Designer Series action figures, oh, and this year marks 75 years since Flash first graced the pages of DC Comics.

#5 - Batman: Mask of the Phantasm 2-Pack (DC Collectibles) - The Batman Animated Series line from DC Collectibles has been one fans have been scooping up at an alarming rate - even despite the lines apparent quality control issues. Why, you may ask? Because Bruce Timm's DC Animated Universe is amazing and literally defined the superhero genera for an entire generation of fans. But, if you thought the line was popular now, wait until you see this...Coming in October is a brand new 2-pack of 6" action figures based off the 1993 DC Animated Movie, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. This one is sure to fly off comic book store shelves as the movie is widely regarded as perhaps the best Batman film to ever hit the silver screen. It was dark, gritty, fun, action-packed, and embodied everything fans loved about Bruce Timm's characters. Included in the set will be Batman and the Phantasm, who has yet to receive a collector-oriented action figure. DC Collectibles has also assured fans that the quality control issues are being rectified and should all be dealt with by the time this set hits stores in October. If you still don't understand our excitement surrounding this set, we highly recommend you track this movie down. Or at least watch the trailer we posted down below...

Why We Love It: Have you seen the movie? Watched the Trailer? Then our work here is done! Plus, this is the first collector-oriented Phantasm action figure to ever be released.

#4 - Legacy Firefly Figures (Funko) - Fans of Joss Whedon's short-lived, much-loved sci-fi series Firefly have been waiting a long time for the Legacy figures from Funko to arrive. These will be hitting in May and will be 6" in height. The figures in the line, including Reynolds, Jayne, Zoe, Hoban and Kaylee, will be fully articulated, come complete with accessories seen in the show and will come encased in beautiful window-box style packaging. Honestly, what more can we say? Finally, one of the most loved science fiction shows of the last twenty years looks to have an action figure line that is sure to do it justice.

Why We Love It: 6" Firefly action figures have been a long time coming and finally, this year, we'll be able to get our hands on them! Now if only we could get that show back on the air!

#3 - Jurassic World Indominus Rex (Hasbro) - While we are extremely disappointed at the total lack of licensed human characters in the Jurassic World series and sincerely hope Hasbro has plans to give us 3.75" G.I. Joe-esque versions of Owen, Hoskins, Hamada and the rest, we can't believe how great the dinosaurs look! None, however, looks as great as the Indominus Rex. For those who don't know, this bad boy is a man-made genetic hybrid and the main attraction at Jurassic World in the film. The beast has been teased and glimpsed in both trailers for the film, but it was not until this figure saw a reveal that the full awesome presence of the beast could fully be realized. The crown jewel of the Jurassic World collection, Indominus Rex arrives in stores this May for $35, roars, chomps, and has color-morphing skin on its back. This one is sure to be a welcome addition in any Jurassic fan's collection!

Why We Love It: The ultimate dinosaur from everyone's favorite film franchise. We've been waiting over 10 years for this movie and now, the toys have us counting down the days till June 12th that much faster.

#2 - Transformers Combiner Wars Devastator (Hasbro) - The Titan Class Devastator was, without a doubt, the main attraction at the Transformers display this year! A full set coming to retail in the Fall, Devastator comes complete with all six Constructicon Combiners needed to make his final form. Each figure is rendered in incredible detail and features impressive conversion from robot to construction vehicle and back. Once combined, Devastator will be the largest combiner Transformer ever made, which is good considering the entire set will set you back about $150. The Transformers brand has been around for over 30 years now, but shows no signs of slowing down any time soon. And that's a good thing because, with figures like this, why would you want to?

Why We Love It: A set of six Voyager Class robots that form the largest Transformers Combiner ever made, what's not to love about this behemoth?

#1 - Batman: The Animated Series Batmobile (DC Collectibles) - And here we have the #1 entry in our Top 10 Toy Fair Reveals for 2015 - the DC Collectibles Batmobile. Based off the classic Bruce Timm show, Batman: The Animated Series, this one comes loaded with features including a sliding roof, light-up headlights and independent moving wheels. Measuring an impressive 24" long, this all-new vehicle can even fit a pair of 6" action figures. Made up of high quality PVC, and featuring a detailed cockpit, this is the definitive version of Bruce Timm's Batmobile. While it is cool and all, you'll have to wait until October to snag one and it's going to cost you $99 to do so in the first place. But, look on the bright side, at least you have time to save, right?

Why We Love It: The definitive plastic rendition of Bruce Timm's Batmobile from Batman: The Animated Series.

And so, with that, our countdown of the Top 10 Toy Fair Reveals has come to an end for another year. As we mentioned above, this was another historic year for the show and it is sure to be another awesome year for fans and collectors looking to add the coolest and latest plastic to their shelves.

While we tried to showcase a bit of everything, we know that not everyone is going to agree with every entry made on this list, so we encourage you to comment below and let us know what we missed and why you feel it belongs on the list.

Now, while that may complete our look at the Top 10 Toy Fair Reveals for 2015, we still aren't done with the event. There is still one more list we'll be counting down, based around a collectibles company that takes all ten of the entries above and makes them all look like bargain store trash. We're talking, of course, about NECA!

But that list will be a little later on. Plus, we don't want to take anything away from the impressive pieces making up this list either.

Be sure to stay tuned as we prepare to unleash our Special NECA Edition of our Top 10 Toy Fair Reveals list for 2015!
